About the Chiapas Maya Project

The mission of the Chiapas Maya Project is to create a digital record of Highland Maya material culture using artifacts, archives, photography, and art to weave networks between curators, researchers, weavers, artists, and others. Use this record to train interns in documentation, curation, and conservation through the project website.

  • Have a structure in place for future work.
  • Form strong collaborations with scholars, the creators of material culture, and students.
  • Provide an information source that can be used by a wide variety of individuals interested in cultural heritage.
  • Digital access to historic collections provides a context for a changing culture.
  • Use the project as a tool to train young scholars and practitioners, especially the Maya, in curation, documentation, and care.
